Clinical Questions

Why do I need to see a gum specialist if my teeth don't hurt?

In most cases, gum disease (periodontal disease) involves slow, progressive loss of bone around your teeth that is not painful and that patients may not notice. A comprehensive clinical exam will allow us to inform you of options to ensure your dental and systemic health are optimized, or to determine if treatment is recommended.

Can my teeth be saved?

Dr. Walker will conduct a comprehensive clinical exam to gather all relevant data and discuss treatment options with you. Our primary goal is to maintain optimal dental health, comfort, function, and esthetics, or work to restore your teeth to that condition.

What is a periodontist? Why do I have to go to a different office than my dentist?

Dr. Walker completed 3 years of specialty training beyond dental school and limits his practice to procedures like dental implants, gum grafting, esthetic gum contouring for "gummy smile," removing hopeless teeth, and treating gum disease. If you are seeking specialty care in one of these areas, or if your dentist has referred you to our office, we deliver specialist-level care with the most cutting edge techniques and equipment. We will work closely with your dentist to ensure optimal care for you in these areas, and you will return to your dentist for any crowns or fillings that may be needed. Regular visits to your dentist are important in maintaining oral health.

Customer Service Questions

I don't have dental insurance. Should I purchase some before my appointment?

Dental insurance differs greatly from medical insurance, and is typically more of a discount plan rather than complete coverage for services. If you do not have dental insurance, we recommend waiting until after your initial consultation, as many plans have a waiting period or restrictions on when coverage starts. At your initial consult, we will review payment options for any services recommended, and we'd be happy to answer questions specific to your needs at that time.

Will my dental insurance cover the cost?

Many dental insurance plans fully cover the cost of an evaluation by a specialist. Dental insurance coverage for treatment varies widely, and if Dr. Walker recommends treatment, we'll thoroughly review what portion will be covered by your insurance.

What do I need to bring to my appointment?
